Poke Bowl Invasion

There is an indisputable trend going on in Madrid for the last months, I am talking about Poke. I first heard about it a year ago, I was told that hawaiian surfers were very fond about it and I was surprised by its simplicity and freshness. Poke is all about raw fish cut in dices with vegetables and usually a basis of rice served in a bowl with a great variety of other possible ingredients like vegetables and sauces.

This is Poke!

The two restaurants that introduced me to this hawaiian gastronomy were La Pagoda, a really nice Asian restaurant close to Bernabéu and lately I found it too in Nubel, the wonderful Reina Sofia restaurant.

However, now it seems that it has become the latest trend, and you are no one if you haven’t found your Poke favourite restaurant, probably because it is quite cheap and healthy.

Some of the pokes you can find in II Poke

During the past months, I’ve seen it everywhere. If you are not confident with the concept, I will introduce to this new fashion by saying that if you are fond of sashimi and ceviche, you will become a fan of Poke.

My best recommendation would be to go to II Poke, near to Alonso Martinez where apart from the Poke-menu you can prepare Poke to your very own style.
First you decide the basis: rice, quinoa, kale or bamboo hawaian rice.
Second you choose the fish: Salmon, tuna, shrimp
Third you choose between vegetables, seaweeds or fruits

Finally, you can eat it at the restaurant or have it delivered to your address.

Hope you like it!!

Five Must Does in Madrid this Christmas

Decorate your home - Build your own Madrilenian nativity scene.
First go to plaza Mayor to buy figurines. The essential figurines are: Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, cow and donkey, angel, some shepherds and the three wise men.
A tip: do not buy the caganet it is not a local figurine.
Another tip: While in plaza Mayor take advantage to have a Christmas chocolate con churros at Chocolatería San Gines.
Then go to your nearby park and pick some moss, stones, twigs, etc.
Find a good spot in your house far from pets. Do not forget to build up a river with kitchen foil and to add some lighting that will make the joy of the little ones.
Visit a museum but make sure you buy your tickets online beforehand.
Our choice :
- Clara Peeters at Museo del Prado from 25th October 2016 to 19th February 2017.
- Renoir at Thyssen Bornemisza Museum from 18th October 2016 to 22th January 2017.
- Robert Doisneau – la Belleza de lo Cotidiano at Fundación Canal from 6th October 2016to 8th January 2017.

Treat your belly and go for nice healthy food.
Our choice:
- Bump and Green
- Hermosos y Malditos
- Nubel
- La Pagoda
- Amazónico

Treat your look. Since you are not going to start a diet go for a facial at Skininc, a massage at Assari or a walk at the Retiro Park.

Have crazy amusement. Go for a show with dinner to the newly revamped Florida Retiro, depending on the day you can choose a musical show or jazz music, and after 01:30 a.m. lively disco and dancing.

And a final suggestion outside the list: stay at home, relax and watch a nice TV series with a glass of Spanish wine avoiding the masses.

Best wishes to all of you from My Little Madrid!!

Tuk tuk and Deliveroo’s special discount for My little Madrid readers

I have recently discovered the only Asian street food restaurant that exists in Madrid: TUK TUK Street food   It has been a great surprise because they have a nice selection of food from Thailand, Hong Kong and Singapour. In fact, when you go there you get a mild feeling of travelling to Asia, where it is quite common to eat all kind of different foods in the streets: tasty, cheap and all in small bites.

Smiling, Get a Perfect Smile!

Inés de la Fressange, former french model, one of the most elegant people I know, quotes in her book, “La Parisienne”, “Don’t go bankrupt buying expensive face creams, the best beauty parlor is your local dentist. An attractive smile and great teeth are the best way to forgive and forget the rest”!
I couldn’t agree more, and last month I went for a complete teeth cleaning and invested in whitening my teeth.

New Year’s Resolution: Get Fit, 3 Sports Around Retiro Park!

In my 2015 wishlist I have been very specific about increasing my sports and yoga practices, you know what they say: “mens sana in corpore sano”. But to be fair, it is tricky to start the year off on the right foot because of the cold season. It stops many of us from accomplishing this very popular goal; getting fit. However, Madrid offers new healthy and cool sports on regular basis, where the cold is not an issue. So here three suggestions involving the Retiro Park!

SKINC- Skin Supplement Beauty Bar

On the Plaza de Santa Ana, inside the well known Hotel ME Santa Ana (Meliá Hotels) you can peek through the window a very elegant, modern, clean and polished white bar with many colourful little bottles. I was intrigued to know what it was about... and the story behind it made me even more attracted. It is the Skin Supplement Beauty Bar, a concept created by a wonderful lady named Sabrina Tan.

Tip for September: a picnic at the Retiro by Magasand

So, we are back in town and it’s official, the holidays are over. We all look very suntanned but inside a terrible post-holiday depression has overcome us… no more outdoor activities either in the sea or the mountains, the majority of us are now confined to be in front of a computer.
Summer holidays are over and we have the pavement as landscape, however, we at My Little Madrid have a recommendation that will, for sure, make you feel as though coming back to the city wasn’t so terrible... as you will have the feeling again of being free among nature!!
You just have to follow our instructions:

Shopping for gourmet canned seafood - La Conservera by Frinsa

There is a delicatessen in Madrid that all seafood lovers should definitely visit: La Conservera by Frinsa. It is a great place for tin can shopping, and despite the fact that we sometimes consider canned food less interesting than fresh food, I have to say that the quality of products inside Frinsa’s cans is amazing! a wonderful marine breeze for your next menu!

Find Nature in the Middle of Madrid - El Olivar de Castillejo

Path towards the house surrounded by olive trees
Path towards the house surrounded by olive trees
Madrid has it! incredible surprises when you least expect it. Wandering randomly throuhg Chamartin district,  I discovered an amazing place: Fundación Olivar de Castillejo. A true olive grove with more than 100 olive trees in a hectare of land, located in the middle, but really in the hub of town. Between streets Alberto Alcocer and Enri Dunant with entrance through Menendez Pidal 11. Amazing! A smaill uninviting door without signs or indications, go through it and get literally teletransported into the deep countryside, one of those Andalusian "ventas" dotted with olive trees, flowerbeds and small paths ....

Entertaining at home in Madrid (with little effort) Part 1 – the Dessert

best chocolate cake you can buy in madrid
They claim to be the best chocolate cake in the world and...they are!
Anyone who spends a little time here knows it; Madrileños like street life, they like to be outside, not at home. We like to go to the bar and have a cañita (beer), go to a crowded restaurant, take an aperitivo (snack) at the park... But we're also very social and lately (because of the financial crisis) we are starting to  entertaining at home. Our problem is that the easiness that we like outside does not work when we entertain at home. Inside our houses we like to be formal, everything has to be perfect. And then, yikes! Entertaining becomes a heavy task…!  I am willing to share here some of my best addresses. We will start by the end, the desserts:
