I am from Madrid, love the city and want to share my special addresses. Every day a new idea, place or thing to do in Madrid. Everything has been thoroughly tested but it is only a personal opinion.

La Comercial - Nice Shopping for Christmas Presents

bustier dress by Cristina Ponce de Leon
Look what you can do with your cheeseburger wrappings!!!

La Comercial de Villanueva is an interesting space full of imagination. Carefully selected objects for women, mothers and their daughters; clothes, accessories, books, candles, paintings, ceramic, furniture and much more... Besides its own brand, Casiopea, La Comercial offers national and foreign brands such as NIU, Les Petits Hauts de Paris and Bella Jones.

And the most interesting thing is the opportunity La Comercial provides to young designers and artists who show a promising talent. Two awesome and striking works by artist Cristina Ponce de León are shown at present. One is a bustier dress made out of cheeseburger wrappings and the other a dress made out of wood clothespins.

It deserves a visit, either for christmas shopping or just to admire the work of Cristina Ponce de León.

Jean Paul Gaultier an exuberant exhibition at Mapfre

Gaultier corsets
Gaultier corsets even for pregnant women!

I was reluctant to go to the Jean Paul Gaultier Exhibition at Fundación Mapfre. Don’t know why it didn’t appeal to me. And it was a great mistake!! It is a wonderful exhibition, loads of imagination displayed both by the curator and the artist. Gorgeous set up and magnificent outfits by Gaultier. A real artist!!! It realy deserves the visit (on until  January the 6th).

Photography exhibition by Imogen Cunningham at Fundación Mapfre

Imogen Cunningham at Mapfre

In one of these past grey weekends, I took my car and went to Sala Azca belonging to Fundación Mapfre. Fundación Mapfre stands in Madrid cultural scene with two big locations, one closer to the art triangle (Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen) and the other one close to the Bernabeu Stadium, I’ve always found that it’s atypical place for exhibitions but the visit  to Imogen Cunningham Photo Exhibition was worth it.

Hopper at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

Not very Hopper cannot stop smiling!!

Wonderful Hopper but the exhibition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza  is finishing, must hurry up! just until Sunday  16th September!!!

I must admit I was not very keen about Hopper specially after being overwhelmed with so much information. Yet I liked the exhibition very much and appreciate his talent. It really brings together the largest and most ambitious selection of works by Hopper ever to be shown in Europe, as they proudly announce in the prospectus, so you get perfectly well the grasp of his work and life. Very good work done by the curators.

Casa Decor Madrid 2012

casa decor 2012

Casa Decor is a yearly appointment I cannot miss in Madrid. I enjoy very much to see how different decorators interpret a raw space and transform it to become: cozy, modern, minimal, baroque, country, etc…so varied! Getting from one room to another mutates a universe of taste and aesthetics.
I always get lots of practical ideas for my own house; some very cheap and easy that I can implement right away and some that will enlarge my wish list...

Caixa Forum - Exhibition Les Ballets Russes

Caixa Forum - Exhibition Les Ballets Russes
Caixaforum is always a good option when you want to see an exhibition and have a nice walk around botanical garden and Neptuno area. The building is very impressive, it seems to be floating in the air, made by famous architects Herzog & De Meuron, it has a wonderful vertical garden, the biggest probably in Madrid, made by French gardener Patrick Blanck.
Inside the building there are always good choices for exhibitions. It offers free entrance, cafeteria, and comfortable coaches… I can’t skip the shop managed by La Central, that I simply love and where I always find many funny gifts and interesting books.
In my last visit, I went to see “Les Ballets Russes”, to be honest I didn’t know very well what it would refer to but still, being free and being in Caixaforum I gave it a try!

Unfortunately this Easter in Madrid won't be remembered for its sunshine... however, we managed to get some light and summer breeze visiting Sorolla's museum
Sorolla is a Valencia born painter from the 19th century, well known for painting the sunlight of his land in an outstanding way.

Gervasio Sánchez Photo Exibition

Today's cultural activity has been intense and heartbreaking... I had heard about the transformation of the Lavapies old tobacco factory into a new self managed cultural space La Tabacalera and decided to visit it knowing it was showing Gervasio Sánchez (Photography National Award) photography work.
I had seen a photo of a broken window of car with girls inside and wanted to know more the artist.

Fundación Mapfre - Lewis Hine photographs

Fundación Mapfre is always a good place to go for art and exhibitions in Madrid. It is well located (Recoletos 23), small enough to consume a small part of your morning or evening, good selection of artists and last but not least, Free!!
You might find long queues but go with your group of friends that will make the waiting time more fun!
Today I went to visit Lewis Hine photograph exhibition.  It is an interesting documentary of North America inmigration at the end of 19th and beginning of 20th century; child labour and extreme poverty. There is also a curious part regarding the building of first skyscrapers, very revolutionary at the time, showing the profound interest that machines had on people.
It seems that Hine himself  passed his last days as humble as the people he portrayed despite his talent.
Special attention to Icarus, the worker in the skyscraper, named after the myth of Icarus who flied up in the sky, so close to the sun that the wax of his wings melted provoking his death.

Contemporary Art Center - El Matadero

El Matadero is an amazing space worth the visit. Conceived in the premises of ancient Madrid slaughterhouse, this Contemporary Art Center aims to be the city’s biggest centre for contemporary creation and a leading international space dedicated to present-day creation.
A changing space with a focus on drama, visual arts, design, music, dance, architecture, urbanism, landscapism, fashion, literature, and cinema.

Given its location, Matadero Madrid extends the Recoletos-Prado cultural axis to Legazpi Square, moving the centre of Madrid further out towards the vicinity of the River Manzanares.

Program of activities is intense; from cinema to, exhibitions, performances, dance, music, public installations, workshops... You can even organize you own private event in different size spaces. You can find monthly program here

If weather is nice, I suggest going for the day and alternate cultural visits with a nice walk through its huge central square plus a tasty lunch at its theatre cafe.

Jorge Acuña - Museo del Traje - Madrid Fashion Show

Fashion week in Madrid - front row
Avenida Juan Herrera 2

Fashion week starts in Madrid, and not necessarily at Pasarela Cibeles. The Museo del Traje, worth to visit  any day of the year and directed by young and charming Helena López del Hierro, has a program of fashion shows OFF (meaning off the main circuit); Madrid Fashion Show. Other activities highly recommended can be found here: Museo del Traje activities winter 2012. We went to see young Jorge Acuña; great colours and amazing shapes, inspired in prehistoric animals and bugs.

Arab Spring - Revolution Graffiti

exhibition at Casa Arabe
Alcalá 62

Something different to do far from traditional cultural circuits. Interesting exhibition at Casa Arabe of Madrid "Pintadas de la Revolución". It gathers more than a hundred images taken on the streets of different cities of Arab countries during revolutionary processes. Popular creative protest expression through the use of public spaces. Only for Syria there is an empty panel.

Place: Casa Árabe’s exhibition rooms in Madrid (c/ Alcalá, 62).

Artist - Jorge Fin - Gurriaran Art Gallery

Jorge Fin - "volando voy"
c/Santo Tome 6

A cloud painter or a painter of clouds? Exhibition by Jorge Fin at the art gallery “Gurriaran” c/ Santo Tome 6, under the global name of “Sin Miedo” – Without Fear-. I highly recommend this painter specialized in stunning skies. His paintings are an open window to a lyric world of relaxing blue and white. Everything fits.
