The choice
of renown museums in Madrid is well known (Museo del Prado, Reina Sofia and
Thyssen Bornemisza) but we cannot forget smaller possibilities as interesting as the
big ones an much easier to visit. One of those places is a lovely building, former
residence of Mr Lázaro Galdiano in Serrano Street the Lázaro Galdiano Museum. A
very recommendable visit to make while shopping in the area and after or before
some tapas at Jose Luis Bar or Hevia Bar.

The Museum reflects
the taste of art collectors at the beginning of the 20th century. The
building is magnificent with astonishing ceiling paintings by Spanish painter Genaro
Villaamil and boiseries. It gathers a very complete collection of religious and
landscape Spanish paintings and important Italian, Flemish, French and German pieces
of 13th to 19th century. You can also find armors, china,
jewelry, sculptures, furniture and other artistic objects that were appreciated
by Mr. Lazaro Galdiano.

After
visiting the museum, I was curious about Mr Lázaro Galdiano himself, and
thought that it was a pity his private rooms were not shown to the public. I
also tried to imagine what kind of modern art he would have liked if living
today. The answer might be the current exhibition of art collection belonging
to Leandro Navarro that is being shown there from 18th October to 7
January.
So, go and enjoy both collections!
