Hopper at the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

Not very Hopper cannot stop smiling!!

Wonderful Hopper but the exhibition at the Thyssen-Bornemisza  is finishing, must hurry up! just until Sunday  16th September!!!

I must admit I was not very keen about Hopper specially after being overwhelmed with so much information. Yet I liked the exhibition very much and appreciate his talent. It really brings together the largest and most ambitious selection of works by Hopper ever to be shown in Europe, as they proudly announce in the prospectus, so you get perfectly well the grasp of his work and life. Very good work done by the curators.

Remarkable the watercolours on landscape subjects with a very well-built and powerful technique. And it was the watercolours success in 1925 that allowed Hopper to give up his work as an illustrator and devote himself entirely to painting.

Landscapes are very intriguing and desolated;  lonely houses, out-of-the-way roads, friendless gas stations and railway lines and stations, all of them representing an American way of life in those depressing 1930s.

People and scenes of everyday life are bleak and dead. The figures seem lifeless mannequins or static reflexes of a movie scene. Yes, contrasting light and scenographic composition bring to my mind scenes from movies. Of pure American cinema of the 40s with a strong touch of melancholy and sad aftertaste.
