This Sunday I got a last minute ticket from a friend for the play "De Ratones y Hombres" (Of Mice and Men) Teatro Español at calle del Principe 25 (902 10 12 12) . Lucky to spend the rainy depressing Sunday enjoying a top play written by Nobel price Steinbeck.
Very interesting “mise en scene” and powerful interpretation. After leaving the Theatre, I couldn’t help thinking about the play, very inspiring!!
The story takes place during the American great depression. The two main characters are migrant ranch workers with a common dream: to become owners of their own piece of land. Their friendship is specially touching as one of them is mentally disabled. They take care of each other in a brutal world ruled by physical tiring work while fatality threatens during their difficult existence. The rest of the characters are equally interesting, but I won’t tell you any more… you have to go or read the play..!
Steinbeck took the title from a line of Robert Burns poem, "To a Mice", where he compares men life with mice life in its difficulty and hardness.
I leave you a fragment of the poem :
But little Mouse, you are not alone,
In proving foresight may be vain:
The best laid schemes of mice and men
Go often awry,
And leave us nothing but grief and pain,
For promised joy!
Still you are blest, compared with me!
The present only touches you:
But oh! I backward cast my eye,
On prospects dreary!
And forward, though I cannot see,
I guess and fear!
Hurry up booking tickets!! The play will stop performing on the 27th of May
