Books - My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece (Annabel Pitcher)

My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece is a wonderful first book by Annabel Pitcher. Its reading took me back to another book I liked very much "The Curious Incident ofthe Dog in the Night-time" by Mark Haddor but also to some of my best favorites in Spanish "Un Mundo para Julius" by Alfredo BryceEchenique and "El Principe Destronado" by Miguel Delibes, all of them have in common that they are written in a first person perspective of a young boy.
"My Sister..." is not only very intelligently constructed and written but reflects the actual way of life in real England, a modern novel of manners. Worth reading!!

Annabel, in her blog, describes the content of the book as follows:
Ten-year-old Jamie hasn’t cried since it happened. He knows he should have – Jasmine cried, Mum cried, Dad still cries. Roger didn’t, but then he is just a cat and didn’t know Rose that well, really.
Everyone kept saying it would get better with time, but that’s just one of those lies that grown-ups tell in awkward situations. Five years on, it’s worse than ever: Dad drinks, Mum’s gone and Jamie’s left with questions that he must answer for himself.
This is his story, an unflinchingly real yet heart-warming account of a young boy’s struggle to make sense of the loss that tore his family apart.
